The Deadzone

Project: Studying the Deadzone, mapping its boundaries, checking its growth.

Working on this: Rae, Grant, Reese

On 07 April 2015, Reese, Rae, and Grant attempted to map the Deadzone and this is what Reese drew up based on what they found as well as the notes gathered below:

Notes:

  • Map Info:
  • Numbered Large Red Points - Numbered construction markers left during the boundary investigation.
  • Small Red Points - Projected rough outline of the Deadzone based on investigation.
  • Shaded Area - Area in which the chill of banality seems to be lessened.
  • Large Purple Point - The Chateau - The former freehold that was razed, current site of a large McMansion. Just outside the deadzone.
  • Something is going on on Zug island just outside of the southeast end of the Deadzone. Guards, fenced/gated access points, three trails of smoke rising from the island.
  • Water treatment plant is within the Deadzone at southeast end of the Deadzone.
  • The boundary does not appear rigid but seems to wobble back and forth a bit.
  • It is easier to sense the boundary from within, the edge clearer when passing to the outside from within. Outside, the boundary is harder to sense until crossed.
  • The boundary adheres to the Detroit city line about 70% of the time but moves back and forth in several areas.
  • Measure 2 areas seem to be within the Deadzone.
  • The area around Hamtramck and Highland Park as well as the Cemetery and parks as well as the University district are areas where the chill is lessened.
  • Areas of tourism and larger numbers of out-of-towners seem to have a lessened chill.
  • The area around the Warrendale Neighborhood is within the boundary but it shifts around River Rouge Park until it hits the Brightmoor neighborhood and US-24
  • The Eastern edge is where things get fuzzy and while it does not reach the Grosse Pointes, it does bleed outside the city limits.
  • The Chateau exists outside of the boundary but close to it in Grosse Pointe.

The Pills

Project: There are pills being given to students. What is up with that?

Working on this: Grant

New Residents

Project: Befriend a new resident and follow up with them over time, see if their banality increases from living within the city and how fast.
