Jefferson Corridor

The East Jefferson Corridor runs six miles on Jefferson Avenue from I-375, just east of downtown, to Alter Road, Detroit's east boundary adjacent to the Grosse Pointes. The Corridor contains a number of historically significant structures, stretching along a scenic three-mile section of East Jefferson Avenue beginning just east of downtown Detroit. These include the Alden Park Towers, the John N. Bagley House, the John Campau House, the Garden Court Apartments, The Kean, The Palms, and the Chauncey Hurlbut Memorial Gate that stands at the entry way to Water Works Park on E. Jefferson at Cadillac Boulevard. East Jefferson also boasts it's own castle. The William H. Wells House is a two-and-one-half-story Romanesque Revival mansion, built of coursed, rock-face stone.

Beyond that first few miles, it is an area that has seen better days. Once known as the River Road, E. Jefferson Avenue is one of Detroit's widest, and the ride down it becomes progressively seedier as you pass orphaned, abandon buildings and vacant, weedy lots. The other two main thoroughfares through the Corridor are E. Lafayette Street and E. Vernor Highway. Neither has fared much better as they move through urban meadows where homes and businesses once stood.
