Upper East Side

The mostly-residential Upper East Side shows signs of decay: a number of empty lots dot the landscape, the roads and sidewalks are cracked and seamed, and there are plenty of weed-covered yards, broken-down cars, and boarded-up windows. Still, one finds pockets of neighborhood pride here and there--a few well-kept houses, a few places where people have turned a vacant lot into a neighborhood garden, or seeded it with wildflowers and evergreen shrubs.

Eastward and northward, the houses trend more toward real decay, and one might find a building with the roof caved in, or an empty shell of a house with no windows or door at all. The neighborhood immediately to the west, Poletown East, is also residential; as one heads in that direction, things get cleaner and less run-down. The same progression occurs to the south, toward Islandview.
